side draught induction - victorian culvert

Length Around 500m
Pipe type >2m round brick, 2.5m brick arch
Interesting points Ridiculously big sewer overflow chamber, cool parallel twin brick arch section
Bad points Poo smells
Smell rating (10 good, 0 bad) 6/10

Hidden in a park, the stream enters the culvert by a sewer overflow outlet - the tell tale tampons tell the tale. A quick shimmy under the grille, and you're in.
Another fine example of Victorian brickwork, a 'grip' or channel running down the centre.
After a short way, the drain splits into two parallel brick arches.
The right hand drain has strange manhole shafts that have no ladders or step-irons.
A new 1.5m RCP joins further downstream on the right.
A quick stoop up there and it opens out into an unbelievable sewage overflow chamber.
There are numerous wheels to control sluce gates to divert the sewage flow in different directions.
Back out in the main drain, the water level rises and rises and rises.......
And then you emerge into daylight, albeit with wet swingers.....
