storm drains

Drains can be classified into several categories. The first and least desirable to visit are sewage drains. They stink of poo and are pretty rough places to visit. I once accidentally lifted the manhole to a sewage drain, thinking it was just surface water and I nearly threw up due to the putrid stench.

Next we have storm drains. These are drains solely intended to carry the water from flash floods, usually after thunderstorms. Not as common as in Oz or the US, but more common than you might think.

Thirdly we have surface water drains. These usually carry water from roads and car parks down to nearby rivers. They are by far the most frequent drain, but are not that easy to discover.

Finally there are what is known as culverts. These are drains that are used to carry streams and rivers that once flowed on the surface. University culvert is a prime example.
